What is the significance of the 'shhh' symbol in futbol / soccer?
I have noticed on numerous occasions that futbol / soccer players will put one finger to their lips as if to say ‘shhh.’ It is often after a goal or some significant moment in the game. On one specific occasion, I know that it was an away game (meaning hostile audience).
Is there some significance behind this gesture other than the obvious universal language for ‘shhh’?

Especially in scoring a goal in front of the other team’s fans, it’s telling them to be quiet, i.e. stop cheering. It’s a way for the player to get back at the crowd who has been booing him for the whole match.
